Magento & Adobe Commerce Lifecycle Alert

Magento 2.4.6 End of Support Is Approaching

Plan the right upgrade. Protect your store.

Last reviewed: July 2026 · Reviewed by: SnapTec Magento Engineering Team

Standard support for the Adobe Commerce and Magento 2.4.6 release line ends on 11 August 2026.

For Magento Open Source merchants, that means no extended-support security patches from Adobe. For licensed Adobe Commerce merchants, extended support provides more time, but it does not remove the need to plan the next upgrade.

SnapTec helps merchants assess their current Magento environment, identify security and compatibility risks, and build a practical upgrade roadmap without disrupting trading.

11 August Changes the Risk Profile of Magento 2.4.6

Once standard support ends, the difference between Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source becomes critical.

Magento Open Source 2.4.6

Adobe’s extended-support patches are not available for the Magento Open Source codebase. After 11 August 2026, Magento Open Source merchants on 2.4.6 should not expect ongoing Adobe security, quality or platform-compatibility updates for that release line.

That can create growing exposure around:

  • Security vulnerabilities
  • PCI DSS requirements
  • PHP and database compatibility
  • Unsupported extensions
  • Payment integrations
  • Hosting infrastructure
  • Rising maintenance costs

Adobe Commerce 2.4.6

Licensed Adobe Commerce customers receive additional time. Adobe currently provides extended support for Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 through 30 August 2027, including core quality and security patches. A limited security-only transitional period is scheduled through 31 May 2028.

However, support for the Commerce application does not automatically extend the lifecycle of third-party dependencies such as PHP, MariaDB, OpenSearch, Redis, Valkey or RabbitMQ. Adobe recommends monitoring these dependencies separately and working with a PCI assessor where necessary.

Unsupported Magento Is Not Only an IT Problem

An outdated Magento release can affect more than the development backlog.

Payment and Compliance Exposure

Adobe warns that unsupported Commerce software no longer receives product changes covering areas such as security and PCI compliance. Merchants may need to manage their own patches, security controls and PCI recertification. Depending on the store, payment provider and compliance scope, this may increase the risk of penalties, additional assessment requirements or restrictions on card processing.

Security Patch Gaps

New vulnerabilities do not stop appearing when platform support ends. Without vendor-backed patches, your team may need to rely on custom fixes, third-party support or emergency remediation, often with less testing and greater operational risk.

Extension and Integration Failures

Older Magento versions gradually lose compatibility with payment gateways, ERP and CRM integrations, shipping providers, search services, tax platforms, marketplace extensions, and PHP, database, or infrastructure services.

Higher Maintenance Costs

Keeping an old environment running can look cheaper than upgrading, until every routine change requires additional workarounds, regression testing and specialist support.

Greater Upgrade Complexity Later

Magento upgrades rarely become easier when delayed. More skipped releases usually mean more dependency conflicts, outdated custom modules and a larger testing scope.

Adobe Commerce on Cloud Will Enforce Supported Versions

Adobe is introducing a version-upgrade enforcement policy for Adobe Commerce on Cloud. On each published enforcement date, Adobe will stop maintaining Cloud environments that remain on the affected unsupported release, and reserves the right to decommission them.

The first enforcement date is 1 June 2027 for release lines whose extended support ends before then. Adobe currently lists:

Adobe Commerce 2.4.4
1 June 2027
Adobe Commerce 2.4.5
1 June 2027
Adobe Commerce 2.4.6
1 June 2028
Adobe Commerce 2.4.7
1 June 2028

Cloud merchants should upgrade to a supported release, or complete an approved migration path, before the enforcement date for their release line.

Start With a Magento Upgrade and Stability Assessment

Do not begin with a blind version upgrade. SnapTec first reviews your current platform, customizations, integrations and infrastructure to identify what could fail, what must change and which upgrade path makes commercial sense.

Your Assessment Includes

Version and Patch Review

We identify your exact Magento or Adobe Commerce version, patch level and current support position.

Security and Compliance Risk Review

We examine visible security exposure, patch gaps, outdated dependencies and areas that may affect PCI DSS readiness.

Extension Compatibility Review

We check whether critical extensions are supported on the proposed destination version and flag modules that may need replacement or redevelopment.

Custom-Code Assessment

We review the likely upgrade impact across custom modules, themes, checkout, catalog logic and integrations.

Platform Dependency Review

We assess compatibility across PHP, database, search, cache, queues and hosting infrastructure.

Performance Review

We identify technical issues that may be contributing to slow pages, poor Core Web Vitals, unstable checkout or inefficient infrastructure usage.

Upgrade Effort and Cost Range

You receive a realistic delivery range based on the actual environment, not a generic Magento upgrade estimate.

Three Strategic Options

Where appropriate, we compare: (1) Stabilize the existing store, (2) Upgrade Magento or Adobe Commerce, (3) Modernize or replatform selected parts of the architecture.

90-Day Action Roadmap

You receive a prioritized plan covering immediate risks, upgrade preparation, implementation and post-launch stabilization.

  • Whether critical security patches appear to be missing
  • Whether the frontend or infrastructure is outdated
  • Whether an immediate technical review is recommended

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Magento 2.4.6 support end?

Standard support for the 2.4.6 release line ends on 11 August 2026. Licensed Adobe Commerce customers are eligible for extended support through 30 August 2027. Extended-support patches are not available for the Magento Open Source codebase.

Is Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 unsupported after 11 August 2026?

Not completely. Its standard support period ends, but Adobe currently provides licensed Adobe Commerce customers with extended quality and security support through 30 August 2027. Magento Open Source merchants do not receive that extension.

Does Magento Open Source 2.4.6 receive extended security patches?

No. Adobe states that extended-support security patches are available only to Adobe Commerce customers and not to the Magento Open Source codebase.

Is Magento 2.4.6 automatically PCI non-compliant after support ends?

The answer depends on the edition, support stage, technical environment and assessment scope. Adobe warns that unsupported Commerce versions are no longer PCI compliant and that merchants may need to manage their own patches and PCI recertification. Licensed Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 customers remain within Adobe's extended-support period after 11 August 2026, while Magento Open Source merchants do not receive that extension. Your Qualified Security Assessor or payment-compliance provider should confirm the position for your specific environment.

Should we upgrade to Magento 2.4.8 or 2.4.9?

The best destination depends on extension compatibility, integrations, custom code, hosting dependencies and your release strategy. Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 is the latest release line as of July 2026, but the newest available version is not automatically the lowest-risk destination for every store. SnapTec evaluates the available upgrade paths before recommending a target.

Can we remain on Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 during extended support?

Yes, provided you are an eligible Adobe Commerce customer and keep the latest applicable patches and supported dependencies in place. However, extended support should be used as structured migration time rather than a reason to postpone upgrade planning.

What happens to unsupported Adobe Commerce Cloud environments?

On the applicable enforcement date, Adobe says it will stop maintaining affected Adobe Commerce on Cloud environments and reserves the right to decommission them. Adobe plans to provide advance notifications and a data-export window before deactivation.

How long does a Magento upgrade take?

The timeline depends on the number of skipped versions, custom modules, integrations, extension compatibility, frontend complexity and testing requirements. A relatively clean store may require a focused upgrade project, while a heavily customized environment may require phased preparation and modernization.

Can SnapTec upgrade a heavily customized Magento store?

Yes. The assessment is designed to identify how custom modules, checkout logic, themes, integrations and infrastructure affect the upgrade before implementation begins.

Can the upgrade include Hyvä or performance improvements?

Yes. Magento version upgrades can be combined with Hyvä implementation, Core Web Vitals improvements, infrastructure optimization or other modernization work when there is a clear business case.
