Search for a Shopify agency and you'll find hundreds, all promising the same thing: a beautiful store that converts. Underneath the identical wording are very different businesses. Some are design studios that hand your mockups to someone else. Some are development shops that will build anything you specify and never question the brief. Some are marketing agencies that treat the website as somebody else's problem.

This guide explains how those types differ, what each one costs in 2026, whether a Los Angeles or California Shopify agency is actually better for you than one elsewhere, and what to ask before you sign a contract. One caution before we start: almost every pricing guide online is written by an agency or a directory with something to sell, and the numbers disagree with each other. We name the sources so you can weigh them, and we'd suggest collecting two or three itemized quotes before trusting any benchmark, ours included.

Four Kinds of Shopify Agency, and Why the Label Tells You Little

"Shopify agency" isn't a protected term. In practice the market splits into four groups, and most of the confusion in the buying process comes from mixing them up.

Shopify web design agency or design studio. Strong on brand, layout, and visual direction. Some build what they design; others pass the build to a development partner. Ask who writes the code and who's accountable if the live site doesn't match the mockup.

Shopify web agency or development agency. Builds themes, custom sections, integrations, and apps. Strong on engineering, sometimes light on conversion strategy and design research. Best when your brief is clear and technical. See our Shopify development service.

Shopify marketing agency. Runs paid media, email, SMS, SEO, and creative. Usually doesn't build or fix your store, which matters because traffic sent to a slow or confusing store is wasted spend. See our paid media management service.

Full-service Shopify agency. Design, build, and growth under one roof. Convenient and often better for accountability, but check that each discipline has real people behind it, not a single generalist.

Start with the problem you're trying to solve, not the label on the agency's homepage. A design studio with no development partner is a risk for a full redesign. A development shop with no CRO background can build exactly what you asked for and still convert poorly.

What a Shopify Agency Costs in 2026

Published 2026 cost guides, including those from Folio3, 7Sea Marketing, and Shopify Agency Directory, give broadly consistent ranges even where their exact numbers differ. A basic, theme-based build sits in the low to mid thousands of dollars, with some guides placing agency-built standard stores between $3,000 and $20,000. Custom builds for established brands commonly land between $15,000 and $60,000. Shopify Plus projects, with checkout customization, B2B, or multiple storefronts, are reported from about $25,000 up to $250,000 or more.

Hourly rates follow the same pattern: US and UK agencies are reported at roughly $75 to $200 per hour, with Plus specialists at $150 to $300. Ongoing retainers are reported at $1,500 to $10,000 per month. One independent cost estimator in the guides we reviewed put a US agency build well below most agency-published figures, a reminder that guides written by agencies tend to skew upward. Shopify's own plan fees, theme costs, and app subscriptions come on top of any agency fee.

What moves the price most: how custom the design is, how many systems you need connected (ERP, subscriptions, loyalty, reviews), how many products and variants must be migrated, and whether you need Shopify Plus features. What's easy to forget: monthly app costs, content creation, photography, and the retainer you'll probably want after launch.

Design Agency, Development Agency, or Marketing Agency: Which Do You Need?

Start from the problem, not the label.

You're launching a new brand or doing a full redesign: you need design and build together. A design-only studio is a risk unless they have a development partner they work with every week.

Your store looks fine but converts poorly or runs slowly: you need conversion and performance work, not a redesign. See our guide to Shopify CRO and speed optimization.

Your store works and traffic is the issue: a Shopify marketing agency or SEO partner is the right call. Start with our SEO and content strategy service.

You need a custom function, such as trade pricing, a bundle builder, or an ERP sync: you need engineers, possibly a custom app.

You're moving from another platform: you need a migration specialist, because the redirects and data mapping decide whether your search traffic survives. See our Shopify migration guide.

Does Location Matter? Los Angeles and California Shopify Agencies

Searches for a Los Angeles Shopify agency or a Shopify agency in California are common, and the instinct behind them is reasonable: you want people who understand your market and can meet you in person. For most Shopify projects, though, location matters much less than three things you can check on a first call.

First, time zone overlap. A team that's online during your business hours can answer a checkout question the same afternoon. Second, who actually runs your project: a named project manager and lead developer who join your weekly call, as opposed to an account manager relaying messages. Third, relevant work in your category. A fashion brand in Los Angeles will often get better results from an agency that's shipped comparable catalogs elsewhere than from a local generalist.

In-person workshops and photo or video production are the cases where being nearby is a real advantage. For design, development, migration, and optimization, a remote team with US business-hour coverage and a clear communication rhythm is a legitimate choice, and it widens the pool of specialists you can consider.

Use the same checklist with every agency you talk to, so the proposals are actually easy to compare side by side.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  • Who exactly will work on my project, and are they employees or subcontractors?
  • Can I see three live Shopify stores you built, ideally in my category and price range, and speak with one client?
  • How do you handle performance: what Core Web Vitals and app-count targets will the finished store meet?
  • What does the estimate include and exclude: design revisions, QA, data migration, redirects, training, documentation?
  • Who owns the code, the theme files, and the accounts at the end of the project?
  • What's your process for testing checkout, discount logic, and mobile before launch?
  • What happens in the first 30 days after launch, and what does support cost after that?
  • How do you report progress, and how often will I see working staging builds, not just mockups?

Red Flags in a Proposal

  • A fixed price quoted before anyone has looked at your catalog, integrations, or analytics.
  • No mention of redirects, tracking, or QA, which are the unglamorous parts that fail first.
  • Guaranteed revenue, conversion, or ranking outcomes. Nobody controls those.
  • A portfolio of screenshots with no live links, or stores that are now offline.
  • Heavy reliance on many apps to deliver what a few lines of theme code could do. Each app adds weight and monthly cost.
  • Refusal to give you full ownership of your theme code and your store's accounts.

How to Compare Proposals Fairly

Put every quote into the same table: scope, number of design rounds, integrations, migration work, QA, training, post-launch support, timeline, and total. A cheaper quote that excludes redirects and checkout testing isn't actually cheaper. Ask each agency to explain the largest line item in plain language. If they can't, the number is probably a guess.

If support after launch matters to you, as it should, compare each proposal's retainer terms against our own Shopify retainer plans.

Finally, pay attention to how the agency behaves during the sales process. The way they scope, push back, and answer difficult questions now is a preview of how they'll handle a problem two weeks before launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Shopify web design agency cost?
Published 2026 guides report roughly $3,000 to $20,000 for a standard agency-built store, $15,000 to $60,000 for a custom build for an established brand, and $25,000 to $250,000 or more for Shopify Plus projects. Hourly rates for US and UK agencies are reported at about $75 to $200. These figures come largely from agencies and directories, so get itemized quotes for your own scope.
Should I hire a Shopify design agency or a development agency?
If you need a new brand experience and a working store, hire a team that does both, or a design studio with a development partner it works with regularly. If your design is settled and you need integrations or custom features, a development agency is the better fit.
Do I need a Los Angeles or California Shopify agency?
Not necessarily. Time zone overlap, a named project manager, and relevant category experience matter more than a street address for most projects. Location helps mainly for in-person workshops and on-site production.
What's the difference between a Shopify marketing agency and a development agency?
A development agency builds and maintains the store itself. A marketing agency drives traffic and customer retention through paid media, email, SMS, and SEO. The best results come when both groups share data about what the store actually converts.
How do I know a Shopify agency is legitimate?
Check for live client stores, ask to speak with a past client, confirm who owns the code and accounts, and make sure the proposal states scope, QA, and post-launch support clearly.
