Headless Magento: Vue Storefront vs. Next.js

Decoupling your frontend from Magento is a real architectural decision, and the framework you build it on matters. We build headless Magento storefronts on both Vue Storefront and Next.js, and we'll tell you honestly which one actually fits your team and your requirements.

The Real Decision Isn't Whether to Go Headless, It's Which Framework

Going headless on Magento means separating the storefront your customers see from the commerce engine underneath, catalog, cart, checkout, order management, so each layer can be built, scaled, and iterated on independently. Magento's GraphQL API is genuinely solid ground to build on. The real decision is which frontend framework to build with, and that choice shapes your team's day-to-day development experience for years, not just launch day.

We build on both Vue Storefront (VSF) and Next.js, and we scope the recommendation around your team's actual skills, your performance requirements, and how much of the frontend you want to own versus inherit from a pre-built framework.

Vue Storefront (VSF) for Magento

A commerce-specific frontend framework built with eCommerce patterns already in place, purpose-built for commerce rather than adapted for it.

Commerce Patterns Out of the Box

Cart, checkout, and PLP/PDP logic come pre-built, reducing the amount of custom commerce logic your team has to write and maintain from scratch.

Vue Ecosystem

A strong fit if your team already works in Vue, or if you want a framework with commerce-specific conventions rather than building those conventions yourself.

Integration Boilerplates

VSF's Integration Boilerplate pattern gives a structured, repeatable way to connect additional services, PIM, search, personalization, beyond just Magento.

Best Fit When...

You want faster time-to-launch on core commerce functionality and your team either already knows Vue or is building a new frontend team without strong existing framework opinions.

Next.js for Magento

A general-purpose React framework with best-in-class performance characteristics and a much larger surrounding ecosystem than any commerce-specific framework.

Performance Control

Fine-grained control over rendering strategy per page, static generation for catalog pages, server rendering for personalized or real-time content, tuned to what each page actually needs.

Larger Talent Pool

React and Next.js have a significantly larger hiring market than Vue Storefront specifically, a real consideration for long-term team scaling.

Ecosystem Flexibility

Broader compatibility with third-party tools, component libraries, and headless CMS platforms built for the React ecosystem generally rather than commerce specifically.

Best Fit When...

You need granular performance tuning, you're integrating heavily with non-commerce systems (content, personalization, marketing tech) that are React-native, or your team already has deep React expertise.

We Build Production Experience on Both, on Purpose

So the recommendation isn't shaped by which framework we'd rather work in.

No Default Answer

A lot of headless Magento pitches lead with whichever framework the agency happens to be best at, regardless of fit. We don't default to one answer.

Real Tradeoffs, Not a Feature Chart

If your team is Vue-native and wants commerce patterns handled for you, that's a real reason to choose VSF. If you need granular rendering control and already live in React, that's a real reason to choose Next.js.

Clean GraphQL Underneath Either Choice

Regardless of frontend framework, we design the Magento GraphQL integration layer, catalog, cart, checkout, customer data, to be clean and well-documented.

Adobe Commerce Certified Delivery

Certified Magento delivery on both Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source, since headless architecture works with either.

How We Help You Actually Decide

A structured process from requirements assessment to documented handoff.

01

Requirements & Team Assessment

We evaluate your performance requirements, integration complexity, and your team's existing framework expertise, since the 'better' framework depends heavily on who's maintaining it after launch.

02

Architecture Proof-of-Concept

For close calls, we can build a small proof-of-concept on the leading candidate framework against a real page from your catalog, so the decision is based on how it actually performs, not a feature comparison chart.

03

GraphQL & Data Layer Design

Regardless of frontend framework, we design the Magento GraphQL integration layer, catalog, cart, checkout, customer data, to be clean and well-documented underneath.

04

Frontend Build

We build the storefront on the chosen framework, optimized for Core Web Vitals and the specific customer experience your business needs.

05

Launch & Documented Handoff

We document the architecture and the reasoning behind the framework choice, so your team understands not just how it works, but why it was built this way.

We're Not Selling You Our Favorite Framework

A lot of headless Magento pitches lead with whichever framework the agency happens to be best at, regardless of fit. We build production experience on both VSF and Next.js specifically so the recommendation isn't shaped by which one we'd rather work in. If your team is Vue-native and wants commerce patterns handled for you, that's a real reason to choose VSF. If you need granular rendering control and your team already lives in React, that's a real reason to choose Next.js. We'll walk through the actual tradeoffs rather than defaulting to one answer. This pairs naturally with our Magento retainer support once the storefront is live, keeping the GraphQL layer and both frontend frameworks current as Magento and the surrounding ecosystem evolve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Vue Storefront or Next.js, for Magento?

Neither is universally better, they solve the problem differently. VSF gives you commerce patterns out of the box and a faster path to a working storefront. Next.js gives you more granular control and a larger talent pool, at the cost of building more commerce logic yourself. We'll recommend based on your team and requirements, not a blanket preference.

Do we need Adobe Commerce, or does this work with Magento Open Source?

Headless architecture works with both. Magento's GraphQL API is available on Open Source and Adobe Commerce alike, though Adobe Commerce includes some additional GraphQL coverage for B2B-specific features.

How long does a headless Magento build take?

A focused MVP typically runs 4 to 10 weeks depending on framework choice and catalog complexity, VSF's pre-built commerce patterns can shorten the timeline versus a Next.js build starting closer to scratch on commerce logic specifically.

Can we migrate an existing headless build from one framework to the other?

It's possible but not trivial, since commerce logic, state management, and integration patterns differ meaningfully between the two. We'd scope this as closer to a rebuild than a migration, and we'll be upfront about that during any assessment.

What about Magento's own PWA Studio?

PWA Studio is Adobe's first-party headless option, and we can discuss it during the requirements assessment, but VSF and Next.js currently give more flexibility and a stronger surrounding ecosystem for most of the projects we take on. We'll cover where PWA Studio might still make sense for your specific situation.
