AI Customer Support for Shopify: What It Can Resolve, What It Costs, and How to Roll It Out Safely
How AI customer support works on Shopify, what resolution rates to expect, how tools like Gorgias and Tidio price it, and a safe rollout plan with human handoff.

Most Shopify merchants now get pitched AI customer support every week, usually with a number attached: 60% of tickets resolved, 70% fewer emails, support costs cut in half. Some of that is real. A lot of it describes the best case at the best store, measured in the way that flatters the vendor.
This guide covers what AI customer support on Shopify can handle today, what the published resolution benchmarks actually say, how the main tools price it, and a rollout plan that keeps a human in the loop for anything risky. Most figures below come from vendors and comparison blogs, so we flag them as such. The most reliable test is a pilot on your own tickets.
What AI Support Can and Cannot Do on Shopify
A first point of confusion: Shopify's own AI assistant, Sidekick, is a tool for the merchant. According to the comparison guides we reviewed, it helps you work inside your admin but does not chat with shoppers on your storefront, and Shopify itself does not include a built-in customer-facing AI chatbot. For shoppers, you need a helpdesk or chatbot app that connects to your store data.
What these tools do well is handle repetitive questions that have a clear answer in your data: where is my order, what is your return policy, is this in stock, how do I change my address before it ships. What they do poorly is anything that needs judgment, emotion, or exceptions: a damaged gift, a disputed charge, a refund outside policy, a frustrated repeat customer.
What Resolution Rates Actually Look Like
Vendor headline numbers run high. Gorgias markets its AI Agent as resolving up to 60% of inquiries, but, according to a Macha analysis of its published case studies, results land between about 26% and 56% depending on the brand. The same comparison cites a 2026 benchmark in which the median brand resolves about 45% of AI-touched tickets end to end, and the top quartile clears 65%. Individual case studies range from 26% for one retailer to 72% for a baby-textiles brand. Tidio claims a 67% average resolution rate for its Lyro AI agent and, per its marketing, backs it with a money-back guarantee on its premium plan if resolution falls below 50%.
The numbers are not directly comparable, because vendors define resolution differently. Gorgias counts a ticket as resolved when it closes with no human agent message. Other vendors use an AI-graded measure of whether an answer was accurate and safe. Deflection, containment, and resolution are three different things. Independent reviewers suggest treating headline rates of 60% to 89% as best-case ceilings, and a realistic first-year target for a well-integrated Shopify setup as roughly 55% to 70% first-contact resolution, with plenty of variation by store.
What It Costs
Pricing models differ, and the model can matter more than the headline price. Pricing summarized by Macha reports that Gorgias charges per fully resolved conversation by its AI Agent, about $1.00 on its Starter plan billed monthly and about $0.90 on other plans, and that each AI resolution also counts as a helpdesk ticket, so the same conversation can be billed twice. Overages are reported at around $1.50 per interaction. Confirm current prices with each vendor, because they change often.
A rough example shows why this matters. Suppose your store gets 2,000 support conversations a month and the AI fully resolves 50%. At $0.90 per resolution, that is about $900 per month in AI fees, plus helpdesk ticket costs, against the agent time saved on 1,000 conversations. If your average human-handled conversation takes six minutes, that is 100 hours. Whether that is a good trade depends on your wage cost, your ticket mix, and what happens to customer satisfaction. The example is illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast.
A Safe Rollout Plan
Step 1: Audit your tickets. Export three to six months of tickets and categorize them. Identify the top ten question types and how many have a clear, data-driven answer.
Step 2: Fix your source of truth. AI can only be as accurate as your policies, shipping times, product data, and FAQ. Clean them up first. Contradictory policies produce confidently wrong answers.
Step 3: Connect real data. Give the assistant access to order status, tracking, and inventory through proper integrations rather than a static knowledge base that goes stale.
Step 4: Start with low-risk topics. Begin with order status, shipping, and policy questions. Keep refunds, cancellations, address changes after dispatch, and complaints with humans.
Step 5: Set clear limits and handoff. Define what the AI may decide, when it must escalate, and how the customer reaches a person. Pass the conversation context to the human so the customer does not repeat themselves.
Step 6: Pilot, review, then widen. Run on a share of traffic, read real conversations weekly, and expand only when accuracy and satisfaction hold.
How to Measure Success
- Resolution rate, defined your way. Decide what counts as resolved, and check a sample by hand.
- Reopen and repeat-contact rate. A resolved ticket that returns two days later was not resolved.
- Customer satisfaction on AI-handled versus human-handled conversations.
- Escalation quality. Whether handoffs include context and reach a person quickly.
- Revenue impact. Pre-purchase questions answered well can lift conversion, and badly answered ones can lose a sale.
Where Custom Work Beats an Off-the-Shelf App
Standard helpdesk AI is a good starting point for most stores. Custom work earns its cost when you need the assistant to act inside your systems: look up contract pricing for a B2B buyer, check stock across warehouses before promising a date, route an unusual order for approval, or trigger a workflow in your ERP, with agents that have defined tools, hard limits on what they can decide, and a human checkpoint for anything with financial exposure. That is where our AI agent implementation work comes in.

A Note on Trust
Shoppers tend to be wary of automation when they cannot reach a human. A recent survey found most first-time buyers would rather deal with a store that offers real human support than one that offers AI-only support, even with an exact delivery date. Make the path to a person visible, especially for customers buying from you for the first time. We covered that survey in our post on new-to-brand buyer trust
